One of the neat aspects of history is the ability to remember, learn from and improve upon the ideas, actions or events of a certain time in our lives. 28 years ago our world was a much different place. Some may say time has improved aspects of our lives and also given us cause for concern as well.

As with all history some things change and some things remain the same. With a National population approaching 244 million at that time, we have now more than 300 million. Euro Disney started, one of the Nation’s worst stock market "crashes” occurred thereby causing the world’s economy to stumble. Terry Waite is kidnapped in Beirut and eventually held in solitary confinement for 4 years and released after almost 5 years. The USS Stark was attacked by an Iraq Air to sea missile costing the lives of 37 Sailors. The price of a gallon of gasoline was .89. The average monthly rent was $395. The average price of a new car was $10,300. The average price of a new house was $92,000. And a U.S. postage stamp would have cost you 24 cents.

The above National averages indicate a simpler time that many of us remember in our community as well. At the same time there were many discussions among local residents, Law Enforcement professionals and many concerned citizens about the changing standards of Halloween activities. Included in these discussions were ideas that revealed the need for a "Community Event” that would make it possible for multitudes in our community to enjoy this time while also being in a safer environment. This was the beginnings of what has become the Annual Halloween Block Party and is just one of the events hosted by MainStreet Cleveland.

A multitude of sponsors from In-Kind, Bronze, Silver, Gold & Platinum levels help to make this event possible along with many contributions from businesses, residents of downtown homes. A separate event is also held on Centenary Avenue and surrounding locations that many who attend usually migrate between the simultaneous events.

The 2015 Block Party Schedule will start at 5:00 PM and conclude at 10:00 PM on Saturday October 31st. Vendors will have places around the Courthouse, Inflatable Jump houses and Slides, Costume Contests, Cleveland Dance & Performing Arts as well as Musical Artists. The musical and vocal talents of "Dagger Blue”, "Spades” & will be followed by Lee University graduate & 2015 American Idol runner up, Clark Beckham with his Band for a 2 hour Concert beginning at 8:00 PM. For more information and activity schedules please visit not only for this annual event but for their multitude of activities that enhance and contribute to the betterment of Cleveland and Bradley County.

Many fads have "come and gone” but we are also blessed with those who work diligently to make our community stronger and enjoyable. If you are able to visit this event then by all means do so, but if you have other interests please know that our community takes pride in ensuring that ALL get to have an option to not only enjoy but to also contribute to the volunteer aspect of our DNA. This ability is just one more reason that Bradley County truly is Tennessee at its best!
