Education and The Military

Bumper Stickers. They can be very effective in making us think of things in a different perspective or way. I am sure that many of you have seen the one that has been attributed to the Women’s International League for Peace and Freedom that states "it will be a great day when our schools get all the money they need and the air force has to hold a bake sale to buy a bomber.”

During this time of year of graduation ceremonies and yesterday’s Memorial Day ceremony to recognize, respect and remember our Military fallen reminded me of why we need both. An educated citizenry is needed to help ensure a viable workforce and to continually give back the necessary skills to maintain a civilized society. An active, robust and successful military is also needed to ensure that these same citizens may continue to contribute in multiple ways with the assurance that their homeland is safe from attacks of any enemy, foreign or domestic.

The local educational institutions have all been extremely active with the recent graduation exercises and of course we are all very proud of each student who has done their best to complete their chosen field of study. We continue to encourage each graduate to keep the mindset of "always learning” that will serve them well in each of their lives as they now either further continue their educational pursuits, or find successful employment in the surrounding region. The ability to successfully transition from student to employee (or employer) is not always an easy task. My desire for each graduate is that they become extremely successful and always remember to "give back” to their community in ways which bless their neighbors and community at large.

It does not take one very long at all to realize that not everyone that we meet along this journey called life is, or will even want to be, our friend. Thankfully the majority of the world’s population just wants to live in peace and provide for themselves, their families and their country. There are also those who seemingly, hate to see others live in peace and want to do their best to bring mayhem, disorder, strife and terror across the globe. There is a component of combatting this ideology that in which education can play a valuable role. There is also a component of conventional combat that not only needs to, but literally has to be called upon, to ensure that we may continue to live in peace. Ronald Regan in the 1960’s once stated that "Freedom is never more than one generation away from extinction. We didn’t pass it on to our children in the bloodstream. It must be fought for, protected, and handed to them to do the same, or one day we will spend our sunset years telling our children and our children’s children what it was once like in the United States when we were free.”

In our efforts to gain knowledge through educational pursuits, may we NEVER forget that there is a difference between knowledge and wisdom. May we also remember that there is no greater sacrifice that the laying down of one’s life for another. For our community to continue successfully, may we all remember that we need both educational excellence and a strong military. Bradley County is blessed to have both and is yet another reason that we are Tennessee at its best!
