MAYOR'S CURRENT PROJECTS

Bradley County’s First Medical Examiner Vehicle Now in Service

The Bradley County Medical Examiner’s Office is now better equipped to perform its duties with the addition of a well equipped, diesel powered vehicle. It is designed specifically to assist in the investigation of certain types of deaths in the County. This is the first such vehicle in the history of the Bradley County Medical Examiner’s Office.

State law requires the M.E’s office to investigate, perform examinations and keep records when certain types of deaths occur. This allows for the legal circumstances of a death to be properly documented which is needed for the completion of a death certificate.

Before the M.E. Department obtained its own vehicle Administrator Eric Blach said he often had to depend upon the County Fire and Rescue or EMS Departments for a vehicle to transport a deceased patient. "The new M.E. vehicle relieves those departments of a work load that isn’t their responsibility, Blach said. "This vehicle is equipped with all the supplies and diagnostic tools necessary to conduct death scene investigations. We are now able to respond to the scene, conduct an investigation, and transport the decedent all the way to the State Medical Examiners Office for autopsy if necessary. This has truly streamlined our efforts.” Blach expressed deep appreciation to EMS Director Danny Lawson and BCFR Chief Dewey Woody for their assistance in the past.

Bradley County Medical Examiner Dr. Jeffrey Miller agreed with Blach’s assessment. "We could not have functioned in the past without the involvement of Bradley County EMS and Bradley County Fire and Rescue. We will continue to utilize those departments, but will be able to take most of that burden off them. This van is a step in the direction to improve the capabilities of the Bradley County Medical Examiners Office.”

EMS Director Lawson and BCFR Chief Dewey Woody both said they were glad to assist the Medical Examiner’s office but agreed that a dedicated M.E. vehicle was needed. Lawson said "the call volume would not always allow an EMS vehicle to be used to transport a deceased patient. It is more appropriate that the M.E.’s office have its own vehicle rather than tie up an emergency vehicle.”

County Mayor Davis said the new vehicle is a fine example of cooperation between County Departments. It was obtained with the assistance of EMS Director Lawson who helped the M.E’s Office locate a refurbished EMS vehicle.
Davis agreed that the new vehicle is a great step forward for the M.E.’s Office. He said it will assist with the goals of; helping detect unsuspected homicides, protect the health of the community, clarify worker’s compensation insurance claims and provide more accurate vital statistics.

Records show this busy office performed 57 Autopsy’s, signed 89 death certificates and performed 128 scene investigations in the last fiscal year. The M.E’s Office has four employees and is located in the Courthouse Annex Building.

Bradley County Mayor Gary Davis has announced the launching of a county recycling program for outdated, used or surplus computers and electronics.

"The growing number of discarded electronic products has created a need for an electronics recycling program that is efficient, safe, and cost effective. After months of study and discussions with Creative Recycling Systems I have signed an agreement with CRS to manage the County’s "e-scrap” at no cost to the county or the taxpayer."

The list of accepted electronics for recycling include: Desktop Computers, Fax Machines, Diodes, Laptop Computers, Electronic Games, Terminals, Keyboards, Power & Network Cables, Rechargeable Batteries, Printers, Computer Mouse, Scanners, Copy Machines, VCRs, Stereos, Radios, Mainframes, Network Hubs, Switching Boxes, Controllers, Modems, Docking Stations, CD Roms, Hard Drives, Peripherals, Military Equipment, Electronic Medical Equipment, Telecommunications Equipment, Office Equipment, Banking Equipment. Unfortunately, this program cannot accept Televisions or computer monitors (CRTs).

The only drop off site available at this time is the Peerless Road location near the farmer’s market and cannery because the electronic recycle box must be in a covered area. Signage will be posted to direct people to the proper place. Anyone wishing to recycle items on the above list can drop them off beginning Monday, October 5th.

Mayor Davis, County School officials and Commissioners gathered Thursday, July 9th to break ground for the new Parkview Elementary School to be located on Minnis Road. Mayor Davis is credited with suggesting this first joint venture between County Government, County Schools and the County Parks and Rec Department. The school will be built on a portion of the 90 acre Elrod property previously purchased by the County for a park. The school and park will share infrastructure, saving the school system an estimated
